| How to use it | Simply paste text into the web interface and select a supported language pair to translate content. |
| Cost             | Free.                                                                                                                                              |

| Ownership | Matomo analytics cookies to track anonymous visitor sessions and website usage patterns for performance monitoring. |
| Use in Reporting | Useful for analysing news articles, social media content, documents, or multilingual datasets where quick, low-cost translation is required. |

### What does Apertium do?

Apertium is a rule-based machine translation system designed to provide fast and transparent translation between language pairs. Unlike large neural translation systems, it relies on linguistic rules and dictionaries, making it especially useful for predictable, consistent translations in OSINT contexts.

You can [view the list of language pairs here.](https://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/List_of_language_pairs)

**The lowdown:** It’s particularly strong in translating between closely related languages and in supporting minority/low-resource languages that may not be well covered by commercial translation services.<br>

### How to Use:

**1. Go to apertium.org and select a supported language pair, then paste or input the text you want to translate into the interface.**

**2. You can also paste text directly into the left text box and ask the platform to detect the language. Alternatively you can also translate a document or webpage.**&#x20;

**3. Review the translated output and, where necessary, cross-check meaning using additional translation tools for accuracy and context.**&#x20;

### Cookies:&#x20;

The site uses Matomo analytics cookies to track anonymous visitor sessions and website usage patterns for performance monitoring.

### Use in Reporting

Apertium can be used to:

* Translate foreign-language OSINT material (news articles, blogs, reports).
* Support multilingual social media analysis.
* Assist in analysing documents in less commonly supported languages.
* Provide quick translation where proprietary tools are unavailable or restricted.
* Cross-check translations from other machine translation systems for consistency.
* Support investigations involving regional or minority languages.

| **Capabilities**                                        | **Limitations**                                                           |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Rule-based translation between multiple language pairs. | Limited language coverage compared to major commercial translation tools. |
| Open-source and transparent translation logic. | Translation quality verifies significantly depending on language pair. |
| Supports low-resource and minority languages. | Less effective for slang heavy or context-dependent text. |
| Fast processing suitable for bulk translation tasks. | Rules-based system may produce rigid or unnatural phrasing. |
| No account needed for basic use. | Not optimised for real-time conversational translation. |

### Summary

Apertium is particularly useful in OSINT investigations for translating multilingual content, especially in low-resource language contexts where commercial tools may be limited or inconsistent. It’s best used after you’ve collected foreign-language material, but before deeper analysis or reporting.

### Ownership

Maintained by a global community, originally developed by the Universitat d’Alacant and partners in the open-source language technology community.

### Ethical Considerations

* Machine translations should not be treated as authoritative without verification.
* Cultural and linguistic nuance may be lost or distorted in translation.
* Sensitive content should be cross-checked using multiple translation systems.
* Be cautious when translating potentially sensitive or personal data.
* Avoid over-reliance on automated translation in legal or evidentiary contexts.
