### What does DuckDuckGo do?

DuckDuckGo prioritises user privacy by avoiding personalised search histories and behavioural tracking. Unlike many traditional search engines, results are less influenced by previous searches, making it useful when conducting OSINT research that benefits from a more neutral starting point.

The platform aggregates results from multiple sources, including its own crawler, Bing, Wikipedia and hundreds of other providers.

**The lowdown:** It’s a valuable OSINT tool primarily for OPSEC, non-personalized results, and alternative indexing.

**Note:** Although its index is extensive, it may not always return the same breadth or freshness of results as Google for highly niche or very recent topics.

### How to Use:

**1. Enter relevant keywords, names, usernames, email addresses or organisations using quotation marks for exact matches where appropriate.**

**2. Refine searches using advanced operators such as:**

* **site:**
* **filetype:**
* **intitle:**
* **- (exclude terms)**
* **quotation marks " " for exact phrases**

**3. Review results critically, open original sources rather than relying solely on snippets, and cross-reference findings using additional search engines or OSINT tools before reporting.**

### Cookies:

Minimal cookies for site functionality and preferences. (None used during our site session on 23 July 2026.) Does not track users for personalised advertising in the same way as many mainstream search engines.

### Use in Reporting

DuckDuckGo is useful for:

* Recording the exact search terms and operators used (e.g. site:, filetype:, quotation marks).
* Documenting the date and time searches were conducted, as results can change over time.
* Citing the original source of the information, not DuckDuckGo, wherever possible.
* Including the full URL and access date for any webpages referenced in reports.
* Cross-referencing significant findings with additional search engines or OSINT tools to support reliability.
* Capturing screenshots or preserving webpages where evidential integrity is important.

| **Capabilities**                                                                             | **Limitations**                                                         |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Privacy-focused searching with minimal user tracking. | Search coverage may be smaller than Google for some topics. |
| Reduces personalised search bias, supporting more objective research. | Very recent or quickly changing content may not be indexed immediately. |
| Supports advanced search operators for targeted OSINT collection. | Limited access to deep web or non-indexed content. |
| Searches websites, documents, images, news, and other indexed content. | Advanced search functionality is less extensive than Google search. |
| Useful for discovering original sources, archived documents, and publicly available reports. | Results still depend on third--party indexes and may omit some sources. |
| Great start point for reconnaissance and lead generation before deeper investigation. |

                                                             |

### Summary

DuckDuckGo is a strong initial discovery and reconnaissance tool within the OSINT workflow, best used during the planning, collection and lead-generation phases, where users need to identify publicly available information while minimising personalised search bias.

Although it’s highly effective for locating websites, documents, news articles and other open sources, it should be used alongside other search engines and verification techniques to maximise coverage and validate findings.
