### What does Europe Media Monitor do?

Europe Media Monitor (EMM) continuously collects news articles from thousands of online media sources across the world, automatically translating, categorising and clustering related stories into a single platform.

Rather than acting as a search engine, EMM provides a live overview of global news coverage, enabling you to identify emerging incidents, monitor developing events and compare reporting across different countries and languages. Its automated clustering helps reduce duplicate reporting while highlighting how stories evolve over time.

**The lowdown:** It’s particularly valuable during media monitoring, crisis response, and strategic intelligence gathering, providing rapid awareness of incidents before undertaking deeper investigation.

### How to Use:

**1. Head to the socio-political media monitoring dashboard and browse trending stories.**

**2. You can filter results via date, policy area, and topic:**

* Monitoring breaking news and emerging incidents.
* Tracking media coverage and discovering additional sources.
* Supporting crisis and emergency monitoring.
* Identifying media coverage across multiple countries.
* Comparing international reporting.
* Monitoring terrorism and security-related events.
* Tracking organised crime reporting.
* Supporting due diligence and risk assessments.

[Researchers have used EMM datasets](https://arxiv.org/abs/1603.02604) and analytical capabilities to study media trends, multilingual news analysis, and information extraction techniques.

| Monitors thousands of global news sources. | Limited to publicly available news content. |
| Supports dozens of languages with automated translation. | Doesn’t index all global media outlets. |
| Clusters related articles into single events. | Automated translations may lose context or nuance. |
| Provides near real-time media monitoring. | Cannot verify the accuracy of source reporting. |
| Enables filtering by country, language, and topic. | Some articles may be duplicated or syndicated. |

### Summary

Europe Media Monitor is a powerful media monitoring platform, best used during the discovery, collection and monitoring phases of the OSINT workflow. It’s particularly valuable for identifying emerging stories, monitoring ongoing events, and locating original reporting from multiple countries and languages. However, information identified through EMM should be corroborated using primary sources.

### Ownership

Developed and maintained by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) on behalf of the European Commission.

### Ethical Considerations

* Verify information against original reporting before drawing conclusions.
* Be aware of media bias and differing editorial perspectives.
* Use multiple independent sources to corroborate significant events.
* Consider translation inaccuracies when reviewing foreign-language reporting.
* Respect copyright when reproducing or citing news articles.
