| Account required | No (unless want to submit analysis). |
| Cookies | Minimal/standard web cookies. |
| Ownership | Maintained by a group of volunteers. |
| Use in Reporting | Useful for verifying the location of images and videos, documenting conflict-related incidents, supporting fact-checking, and providing transparent evidence trails for visual investigations. |

### What does Geoconfirmed do?

Geoconfirmed enables researchers, journalists, and investigators to collaboratively determine where an image or video was captured by comparing visible clues such as terrain, buildings, roads, landmarks, satellite imagery, shadows, and other geographic indicators.

The platform became particularly prominent during investigations related to the Russia–Ukraine war, where researchers used it to verify battlefield footage, identify locations of military activity, and create publicly accessible evidence maps.

**The lowdown:** It supports transparent, collaborative geolocation by allowing analysts to document evidence, compare geographic features, and build confidence assessments.
### How to Use:

**1. Browse existing investigations by exploring live maps or create a new investigation relating to an image, video, or reported event requiring verification.**

**2. Click on the icons to open up incidents and follow sources, analyse available visual clues, then compare them against mapping and satellite imagery tools.**

**3. If contributing to analysis, record the evidence, proposed location, supporting sources, and confidence level so other researchers can review and validate the findings.**
## Data Processing

### Account Required:

* [x] Yes
* [x] No

No account is required to view public investigations but an account may be required to contribute to investigations or submit analysis.

### Cookies:

Minimal/standard web cookies. None used during our session on 27 July 2026.

### Use in Reporting

Examples of reporting uses:

* **Conflict mapping:** Verified locations can support the creation of timelines and maps showing the progression of military operations or humanitarian events.
* **Conflict verification:** Researchers have used Geoconfirmed investigations to geolocate battlefield footage, destroyed equipment, and military activity by matching visual evidence with satellite imagery and geographic features.
* **Verification of breaking news footage:** The platform can help determine whether videos circulating online are from the claimed location or are old footage being reused in a new context.
* **Collaborative investigations:** Journalists and researchers can use Geoconfirmed alongside tools such as Google Earth, Sentinel Hub, and Mapillary to build evidence-based geolocation reports.

| **Capabilities** | **Limitations** |
| --------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Supports collaborative geolocation investigations. | Relies heavily on available visual clues; some content cannot be confidently geolocated. |
| Helps verify images and videos through geographic analysis. | Quality depends on the skills and experience of contributors. |
| Allows researchers to document evidence and reasoning. | Crowdsourced investigations require independent review and verification. |
| Provides a transparent record of investigation methodology. | Doesn’t provide guaranteed attribution of who created or uploaded content. |
| Supports conflict monitoring and visual verification workflows. | Primarily supports location verification rather than full intelligence analysis. |
|

                                                     | Information may not represent all available evidence. |

### Summary

Geoconfirmed fits best in the verification and validation stages of the OSINT workflow, supporting transparent, collaborative geolocation by allowing analysts to document evidence, compare geographic features, and build confidence assessments. However, findings should still be independently verified using additional sources such as satellite imagery, official records, eyewitness accounts, and trusted reporting.

### Ownership

Geoconfirmed is a community-driven OSINT platform developed by open-source researchers and maintained by volunteers.

### Ethical Considerations

* Avoid revealing sensitive locations that could endanger civilians or vulnerable groups.
* Consider operational security implications when publishing battlefield geolocation.
* Clearly distinguish confirmed facts from analysis or probability assessments.
* Preserve original evidence and document methodology to maintain transparency.
* Be aware that geolocation can potentially expose individuals, military positions, or humanitarian operations.
