| Use in Reporting | Useful for inspecting image metadata as a supporting signal and for reducing accidental metadata disclosure in working copies. |

### What does Metadata Remover do?

Metadata Remover reads embedded metadata from supported image files in the browser. It can show fields such as EXIF, GPS, XMP and IPTC data and can create a cleaned export. The selected image is processed locally rather than uploaded to Metadata Remover.

The platform can provide leads about a file, but it may be missing, modified or stripped by platforms. It does not prove authenticity or authorship on its own.

**The lowdown:** It’s designed to expose information that may be hidden inside a digital file rather than visible in the image itself.

### How to Use:

**1. Open**[ **Metadata Viewer**](https://metadataremover.ai/metadata-viewer) **and select or drop a JPG, PNG or WebP image.**

**2. Review the detected metadata fields.**

**3.** **If needed, export a cleaned copy and verify that the required metadata was removed. Make sure to preserve the original evidence file separately.**

### Use in Reporting

Metadata Remover can be used to:

* Identify hidden location information by determining whether an image contains GPS coordinates or other location-related EXIF fields.
* Identify devices and capture circumstances by recording camera/lens models, capturing times, exposure information and supported device identifiers.
* Investigate image provenance by examining XMP, IPTC, comments and supported Content Credentials markers.
* Investigate AI-generated material by identifying embedded prompts, models, seeds, samplers or workflow information where those fields are present.
* Document what a file contained before publication as you can export JSON, CSV or PDF metadata reports for an audit trail.
* Prepare material for publication by removing supported metadata that could unnecessarily expose a contributor, source, location or device.

**Note:** Findings should be corroborated with source verification, reverse image search, geolocation, chronolocation and other investigative methods.

| **Capabilities** | **Limitations** |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Reads supported EXIF, GPS, XMP and IPTC information from images. | Does not inspect every possible metadata format or proprietary field. |
| Can expose camera, device, timestamp and location information. | Metadata can be stale, copied, modified or deliberately removed. |
| Can identify supported AI-generation parameters such as prompts, models and seeds when embedded. | Absence of AI metadata does not prove an image was human-created. |
| Detects supported C2PA/JUMBF provenance containers. | It does not validate C2PA signatures, trust chains or complete provenance histories. |
| Provides local JSON, CSV and PDF reporting from the metadata viewer. | Supports JPG, PNG and WebP images; it is not a general file-forensics suite. |
| Removes supported metadata while keeping the original file untouched. | Metadata removal does not guarantee removal of pixel-level watermarks or other non-metadata signals. |

### Summary

Metadata Remover is a free, browser-based option for viewing image metadata and exporting reduced-metadata copies. Its local-processing design can be useful for privacy-sensitive workflows, but results require corroboration and should not be treated as a forensic conclusion.

### Ownership

The platform is maintained by Leo Song.

### Ethical Considerations

* Preserve original evidence before removing metadata.
* Avoid definitive authenticity or authorship claims based on metadata alone.
* Consider privacy, consent and potential harm when handling personal images or location data.
* Document the inspection and export process when results are used in reporting.
