### What does Nitter do?

Nitter is a free, privacy-first front-end for Twitter/X. It strips out ads, trackers, and scripts while still letting you read tweets, profiles, and timelines. This makes it ideal for when you don’t want to leave a footprint or trigger platform logging.

**The lowdown:** It’s a staple OSINT tool for passive collection and discreet monitoring.

**Note:** After discontinuing in 2024 and remerging in 2025, Nitter faces constant threats from rate limits and blocking by X.

### How to Use:

**1. Enter a username, hashtag, or keyword into the search bar.**

**2. You can also paste a direct tweet or profile link and replace twitter.com with** [**nitter.net**](http://nitter.net) **e.g.** nitter.net/username

**3. Browse timelines, media, or RSS feeds anonymously.**

### Cost

## Data Processing

### Account Required:

* [ ] Yes
* [x] No

### Cookies:

Minimal. Some instances may use basic cookies for preferences, but no heavy tracking. When we visited the site on 21.04.26, no cookies were logged during our session.

### Use in Reporting

Nitter is great for screenshots, archiving, and verifying content without altering engagement metrics or alerting subjects. It’s also useful when embedding or referencing tweets in reports without linking directly to Twitter.

In terms of real-world examples, Nitter was used by journalists/researchers during the early coverage of the Ukraine conflict to track Russian troop movements, although there were Twitter account lockouts and visibility issues.

| **Capabilities**                                                 | **Limitations**                                              |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Anonymous viewing of tweets and profiles with no login required. | Not always up-to-date (depends on instance). |
| Faster load times than Twitter/X. | Some instances go offline or get blocked. |
| RSS feed support for monitoring accounts. | May not display all content (e.g. spaces, some embeds). |
| Access to media (images & videos). | Increasingly impacted by anti-scraping measures from X Corp. |

### Summary

Nitter is mainly useful in the early OSINT stages (collection, triage, and preservation) to access and monitor public posts from X (Twitter) without logging in or being tracked. It acts as a lightweight access layer that helps investigators gather and capture data efficiently before deeper verification begins.

### Ownership

Nitter was created by Github user [Zedeus](https://github.com/zedeus/nitter).

### Ethical Considerations

* Respect privacy and legal boundaries when collecting data.
* Be aware that bypassing platform protections may raise ethical/legal concerns.
* Always verify content authenticity as mirrors can lag or miss context.
* Avoid misuse of anonymously gathered information.
