### What does the Treeverse do?

Treeverse takes messy Bluesky reply chains and turns them into structured, easy-to-follow trees. Instead of scrolling endlessly, you can instantly see who replied to whom, which comments gained traction, and how discussions branch out. It’s especially useful when threads get large or chaotic.

**The lowdown:** It’s a lightweight, effective, and easy-to-use tool for visualising conversations, although shouldn’t be used as a full analysis solution.

### How to Use:

**1. Grab a Bluesky post URL or an at://URL and paste it into the Treeverse search bar.**

**2. Explore the tree, navigate replies visually, expand branches, and identify key contributors or sub-conversations.** For example, if we hover over any of the profiles on the tree, we can see their reply like so:

### Use in Reporting

Treeverse is particularly useful for:

* Mapping online conversations and influence flows.
* Identifying central accounts in a discussion.
* Tracking how narratives evolve across replies.
* Highlighting viral or high-engagement responses.

During fast-moving events (such as protests and conflicts), threads tend to get chaotic quickly and eyewitness replies, corrections, and rumours mix together. Treeverse allows you to separate original claims from replies, track who’s adding new info vs repeating others, and follow the most reliable sub-thread. Ultimately it can help journalists and investigators verify what’s actually happening.

| **Capabilities** | **Limitations** |
| ------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Visualises entire Bluesky threads clearly. | Only works with Bluesky content. |
| Makes large conversations easy to navigate. | Limited analytical features e.g. no metrics dashboards and no export/download options. |
| Helps identify key participants/influencers. | Dependent on public post availability. |
| Reveals structure of debates and branching discussions. |

                                                                            |
| Quick and easy to use with no login required. |

                                                                            |

### Summary

Whilst Treeverse doesn’t collect new data, it does make existing conversations far easier to understand. It’s best used in the analysis stage of the OSINT workflow and is ideal for analysts who want quick clarity on “who said what and where it went next.”

### Ownership

Independent/unofficial tool created by [Paul Butler](https://bsky.app/profile/paulbutler.org) (not affiliated with Bluesky Social.) Butler is originally from Halifax, Canada, now based in Brooklyn.

### Ethical Considerations

* Only analyse publicly available content.
* Avoid amplifying harmful or misleading narratives.
* Be mindful of context as thread structure doesn’t equal intent.
* Respect user privacy even on public platforms.

### Related Tools:

* TweetDeck-style tools
